The Mencap Training Academy is part of the Royal Mencap Society and is an Ofsted Good-rated provider of supported internship and pre-internship programmes.
We deliver a programme open to young people with an EHCP from across Northamptonshire.
Learners on our supported internship must attend sessions at our premises at Charles House in Northampton for 2 days a week between September and July. During this time, they will learn all about the world of work and employability skills.
The rest of the week is spend in work experience placements. Supported internship learners are required to complete 420 hours of work experience over the year and we offer placements with employers including Greene King, Yusen Logistics, GXO, Cineworld, The Derngate Theatre, Dunelm, Daisy Chain Nursery, and Bella Italia. Learners are supported in their work experience by our skills coaches. In 2023/24, 96% of learners who completed our Northamptonshire supported internship got a paid job at the end of the programme!
For young people who want to find a job but don't yet feel ready to complete 420 hours of work experience, then we also offer a pre-internship programme. Learners on this programme attend sessions at our Charles House premises 3-4 days a week between September and July and are only required to complete 45 hours of work experience. The aim of the pre-internship is to develop young people's skills and confidence so they can progress onto a supported internship the following year.
